Theme news roundup 7 March

So it’s been a busy week here at themesforge towers so we’ve been trawling through the feeds and catching up in the goings in WordPress land over the past week and cherry picked our highlights from the fast moving WordPress themes world.

Groupon WordPress plugin released.

While this is not a theme story it certainly spiked our interest. WPMU reports on the release of a free plugin developed by Groupon to allow WordPress users to integrate with the Groupon affiliate system. I think this will be really useful to anyone using WordPress to run deal driven websites. I guess it’s now time for a Groupon theme clone (if it doesn’t already exist!)

StudioPress launch Pretty Young Thing on WordPress.com

It’s great to see the Genesis framework can now be run on WordPress.com. Since the announcement a month ago that commercial themes were being rolled out on WP.com it was only a matter of time before Genesis showed up in there. Thankfully it’s been sooner rather than later 🙂

Brian and the StudioPress crew announced that their recent new commercial theme – Pretty Young Thing is now live in the WordPress.com Commercial theme directory. WooThemes also launched Crisp into WordPress.com.

If the install numbers for the first 2 premium themes launched on WordPress.com directly reflect sales then I think WP.com Commercial sales are off to a very bright start!

Swiss Government website launches with WordPress

A swiss Government website focusing on Sports education launched a well put together WordPress powered website running a custom theme and available in 3 languages. A really good example of how WordPress can be used as much more than a blogging tool.

8 Commercial WordPress Themes for Restaurant websites

Having recently completed a theme for a restaurant a can vouch for this list having pretty much the best themes available for restaurants who want to run a website using WordPress.

Joomla Templates powerhouse RocketTheme launches the Gantry Framework

Anyone who has used Joomla extensively in the past will have heard of RocketTheme – in Joomla land they are akin to WooThemes or StudioPress and produce very high quality Joomla templates. Of late, they have been dabbling in the WordPress theme market and I’ve been watching with curiosity as to how this works out for them. Knowing a little bit about both communities I think there are have been big differences traditionally between WordPress theme shops and Joomla template shops. It’s interesting to see one of the big boys bring something new to the game. Well they’ve released a WordPress port of their Gantry framework which looks very interesting. Time to go play with this.
